Little Black Lies
Review: Dr. Zoe Goldman treats patients in the psychiatric ward as part of her residency at a hospital in Buffalo. But she has issues of her own that she feels she needs to deal with as well. Her mother died when she was a child, and she believes she has repressed memories of that day, memories she struggles to bring forward, but also fearful of what they might tell her, in Little Black Lies, a novel of suspense by Sandra Block.
Following the death of her mother, Zoe was adopted by a loving and caring woman. But Zoe still thinks about her birth mother: how exactly did she die? She seems to recall a fire, and her teddy bear covered in blood, details that have recently surfaced in dreams of fitful sleep. With her adoptive mother now in a facility suffering from dementia, she cannot help Zoe understand what she is remembering, or why she might be remembering it now. As Zoe digs into the past to find the truth, she begins to wonder if possibly her adoptive mother may have known more than she had let on over the years.
Little Black Lies is a real treat for fans of intricate suspense novels with plenty of twists to keep readers turning the pages, all centered on a very engaging character. It isn't clear if this might be the first of series, but readers would definitely welcome back Zoe Goldman. As a practicing neurologist herself, the author brings an insider's knowledge of the field to the book, including enough details to be informative and enhance the story but not so much to be intrusive. Overall, this is a remarkable debut novel, one that is enthusiastically recommended.
