Review: Shadows of the Past, the first novel in the Logan Point series by Patricia Bradley, introduces Dr. Taylor Martin, a 29-year-old professor of Psychology at Conway University in the Seattle suburb of Newton. She also has a lucrative career as a much sought after criminologist. And yet Taylor's life is far from perfect: she failed to stop a young man from killing his step father; her engagement to her fiancé Michael was broken by a "Dear Jane" letter and her ran off and married someone else; her friend, Sheriff Dale Atkins, has been shot and is clinging to life; and she is sure she is being stalked by one of her students, Scott Sinclair. And probably most important to her is finding her father, who walked away from his family and disappeared twenty years ago; she wants to know why.

Taylor's path crosses with that of mystery author Nick Sinclair, who has been searching for his estranged brother Scott, who has suddenly vanished. Taylor agrees to help Nick find him, if only to have him arrested for stalking her. Nick, however, wants to prove that his younger brother is just a mixed-up teenager and not a threat to anyone. Their journey together takes them to Mississippi, where they both, coincidentally, grew up.

There are several twists and turns in Shadows of the Past that will keep the reader engaged in the storyline, but of particular note is the well-drawn and appealing characters of Taylor and Nick. The web of intrigue, lies and betrayal that entangles them both is compelling; so, too, is the process of when they begin to piece together the truth to see who is behind the terror facing them both … and Scott, too. As they re-examine their respective pasts they also look for new beginnings. Filled with tension and suspense, this faith-oriented novel is highly recommended.
