Silence in the Dark
A Logan Point Novel of Romantic Suspense by Patricia Bradley
Review: Bailey Adams was engaged to be married to Danny Maxwell. But she came to believe that she and Danny wanted different things from life, so she broke it off and fled their home town of Logan Point, Mississippi for a mission in Chihuahua, Mexico. But now she wants to return and there are those who are out to prevent that from happening, in Silence in the Dark, the fourth and final book in this series by Patricia Bradley.
Bailey believed she was doing good at the mission, educating the children in the hopes of giving them a better life. But then one day, as she was walking with a friend, she noticed a poppy field, an opium poppy field. She wanted to immediately notify the authorities, but her friend was against it. The police were already aware of it, and were being bribed to ignore it. So Bailey suggested notifying Father Horatio, who led the mission. But he, too, knew of the field, saying it provided jobs for the poor. Realizing that there was nothing more she could do, she decides to return to the US. She's asked to chaperone Maria, one of her students, to visit her grandparents in Mississippi. Bailey agrees, and meets Maria's guardian at a local restaurant on the way to the airport. Much to her surprise, Danny walks in, saying he has business in the area. But before they can get reacquainted, shots are fired, and seem to be targeting either Bailey or Maria. A waitress hides them, and Danny, a pilot, offers to fly them out of there. He succeeds, but they are pursued. But who are they after? Bailey, for knowing about the opium field? Or Maria, who may be the target of a kidnapping in the hopes of securing a large ransom for her release?
Silence in the Dark is an exciting conclusion to this series. The characters are very well drawn, engaging and endearing. The situations they find themselves provide just the right amount of tension for the briskly-paced plot, in which the whys are just as important for the characters (and reader) to decipher as the whos. This clean, faith-based suspense mystery is highly recommended.
