A Kate Turner, DVM Mystery by Eileen Brady
Review: House call veterinarian Kate Turner is scheduled to meet with Vivian and Thomas Langthorne, the elderly owners of prize-winning spaniels on a follow-up call to check on one of their dogs, only to find the couple murdered in their study, in Muzzled, the first mystery in this series by Eileen Brady.
There doesn't appear to be anything missing from the couple's home, and the police are inclined to rule the crime a murder/suicide. But Kate can't help but doubt that conclusion. She's known the couple for some time now, albeit as their vet, and while they have their occasional spats, they seemed united in providing the best care for their dogs. It isn't until later when police decide the deaths are suspicious and she learns more about the Langthornes that she realizes there might be a motive — or more like a town-full of motives — for their murder.
It is quite enjoyable accompanying Kate on her rounds and learning more about her community and its residents together with her. (There may be a bit too much information provided in the way of her practice, however!) As an amateur sleuth, she's really not very good, coming to the wrong conclusion far more often than not, but that's part of her appeal, kind of an everyday working woman in an extraordinary situation. Indeed, she doesn't so much solve the mystery of the Langthorne's murder as she stumbles (almost literally) on to it, with some admittedly clever guesswork at the end. There is a lot of credible misdirection along the way, but also clues to the solution of whodunit even if they aren't necessarily seen as such at the time. Overall, Muzzled is an entertaining and strong start to this series.
