Cover Your Eyes
A Morgans of Nashville Novel of Suspense by Mary Burton
Review: It has been almost thirty years since beautiful country singer Annie Rivers Dawson, mother of an infant, was brutally murdered in her home. She was a star in Rudy's honky tonk bar in Nashville and she was destined to make it big. After months of police interviews and investigations, her body was found — but only after an anonymous tip — in a heavily wooded area. Her admitted stalker, Jeb Jones, was arrested, tried and found guilty of killing her. For the past three decades he has claimed his was innocent … and may get another chance to prove it, in Cover Your Eyes, the first in a new series of suspense thrillers set in Nashville by Mary Burton.
Attorney Rachel Wainwright is a Public Defender, who always fights for the underdog. Beside her own court cases, she is a member of "The Innocent Project", spending many hours trying to free the innocent from their sentences. She is assigned to Jeb Jones, who is dying and wants to spend his final days with his son. The only thing she can check after all this time is the blood on the tire iron, which was found in the trunk of Jeb's car at the time of the murder. There could possibly be a trace of blood that could still able to be tested for DNA, a technology not available back then. Homicide Detective Deke Morgan, son of the late Buddy Morgan, who was chief investigator of the murder of Annie Dawson, knows his father was an honest cop and would never knowingly arrest a man he wasn't sure in his own mind was guilty. He does not object to the testing, but is sure it will prove that his father arrested the right man.. When word gets out about the new testing, other young beautiful women are found murdered in much the same manner as Annie. Whoever was killing these women, could it possibly be the same person who killed Annie? Deke and Rachel began to work together to find the truth. The killer, however, is out to stop that from happening.
Cover Your Eyes has a strong suspenseful, plotline with many twists and turns. Rachel and Deke are very formidable, very likeable characters, who pair well together and work off each other's strengths while working on the new murder investigations. Until then, their adversarial relationship kept them on opposite sides of the case. Their relationship is as relevant to the story as is the murders themselves. This is a gripping, fast-moving mystery and a terrific start to this new series.
