Apocalypse
An Ethan Warner / Nicola Lopez Thriller by Dean Crawford
Review: When the Miami police are called to the scene of the murder of a woman and her daughter, they immediately suspect the husband, Charles Purcell. But when he suddenly calls the detective in charge on site, he tells them that they need to contact a man named Ethan Warner, who will explain everything, in Apocalypse, the third thriller in this series by Dean Crawford.
The police do locate Ethan Warner … in Chicago. He, of course, has never heard of Charles Purcell but they convince him that it is in everyone's interests if he fly immediately to Florida. The hook: Purcell can apparently see into the future and knows that Warner is the only person who can solve the mystery of his family's murder. Warner doesn't believe a word of it, but he's intrigued and agrees to investigate. Together with his partner Nicola Lopez, they are flown to South Florida, where they are drawn into a case that jeopardizes not only their own lives, but possibly every person on the planet.
Apocalypse races along at breakneck speed, so fast that it's often hard to keep up with where Warner and Lopez are at any given point in time and what their next most immediate objective is. To the author's credit, he does keep the science jargon to a minimum and (repeatedly) presents a reasonably clear explanation as to how one could see into the future. Unfortunately, it is the in the present facts that trip up the story, starting with the most basic question, Why get Ethan Warner involved at all? True, it spends far too much time on moving the story forward to ponder and explore some of the more interesting puzzles presented, and it is far too politically driven to make the motivation behind the plot to be all that believable, but if one is willing to dive right in and accept at face value all that is written, one will likely enjoy this exciting action adventure novel.
