A Killer Among Us
A Women of Justice Mystery by Lynette Eason
Review: Detectives Kit Kenyon and Noah Lambert have just recently been assigned as partners in the Spartanburg (SC) Police Department, their first case together the shocking murder of a student at a local college in A Killer Among Us, the third mystery in this series by Lynette Eason.
The student, a senior at Wofford Law College, had been shot in the back of the head — execution style. But the murder scene is made more gruesome with one of the victim's eyes having been gouged out and a miniature judge's gavel placed near the body. Soon another student is murdered and mutilated — this time with three toes having been severed — and Kit and Noah realize they have a serial killer on their hands, a man who refers to himself as "the judge". But he's more than that, also acting as jury and executioner in these crimes ... but to what end, Kit and Noah don't know.
A Killer Among Us is a fairly typical serial killer novel, but the story here is focused more on the detectives and their relationship with each other. They have an immediate bond as detective partners, which quickly develops into mutual trust and then romance. But Kit, trained as a hostage negotiator and very good at her job, has a hard time reconciling some of her own personal issues, something Noah tries to work with her to resolve.
The twisty murder mystery storyline plays out well, and the small college town setting offers an interesting contrast to the horror of the crimes. Readers who appreciate character- and story-drive suspense novels that are also written without any coarse language will enjoy A Killer Among Us ... as well as the previous books in this series.
