Too Close to Home
A Women of Justice Mystery
Lynette Eason

Review: Lynette Eason begins a new series of romantic suspense novels under the banner "Women of Justice" by introducing FBI Agent Samantha Cash, a forensic expert who is assigned to work with a South Carolina homicide detective in the case of a series of missing girls, in Too Close to Home.

Detective Connor Wolfe is the single parent of a teenage daughter, Jenna, who has withdrawn from her father since her mother's death ... which she blames on him. But his current case is consuming much of his time: six teenaged girls have disappeared in recent months, their bodies -- three of them so far -- only now being discovered. Samantha teams up with Connor to not only pore over the forensic evidence, but also to work the field. Just as it seems they're closing in on their killer, the case becomes personal when Jenna becomes a target. She, together with a friend, is kidnapped and Connor and Samantha realize they only have a short amount of time to find the girls before they, too, become victims of a determined killer.

Too Close to Home is a suspense thriller intended primarily for a Christian audience. Though the religious element is present, many readers will welcome the fact that the book is written without resorting to objectionable and offensive language. Individually, the characters are nicely drawn, but their interpersonal relationships -- in particular those of the lead characters -- often seem somewhat unrealistic, lacking real-life credibility. Still, the story is fast-paced, the plot well accomplished with references to modern technology and the role it plays in both committing and solving crimes. And though it isn't clear if any of these characters will have a recurring role in future books, Too Close to Home is a good start to this series.

Synopsis (from the publisher): Samantha Cash is the FBI's secret weapon. Her methods are invisible, and she never stops until the case is closed. When missing teens begin turning up dead in a small Southern town, Samantha is assigned to help local chief Connor Wolfe find the killer. And he has two problems with that. There's her faith -- in God and herself. And then there's the fact that she looks exactly like his late wife. As they get close to an answer, the case becomes personal. The killer seems to be taking an interest in Connor's 16-year-old daughter, who thinks her dad is getting way too protective. Can't a girl just have some fun?
