A Kate Reilly, Racing Mystery by Tammy Kaehler

Braking Points by Tammy Kaehler

Review: Tammy Kaehler provides a fascinating insider perspective of racecars and their drivers in Braking Points, the second mystery in this series featuring Kate Reilly.

Kate is a full time driver with Corvette Privateer Sandham Swift, racing in the American Le Mans Series' GT Class. From a child, Kate knew she wanted to be a race car driver and now she is. Better still, she's good at it, with a steady job and sponsors, including a brand new contract. She enjoys the dangers both on and off the track. But sometimes the consequences simply aren't fair. In a recent race she came in contact with a rival car — something all drivers try to avoid, but it happens — wrecking both vehicles and sending the other driver to the hospital. The media was relentless in their coverage, focusing more on the fact that she was a woman than the other driver being injured. But that's the lease of her concerns. Off track someone is trying to kill her. First her orange juice is poisoned, a cup she fortunately did not drink from, but gave, instead, to a friend, who drank it and died. Then someone tries to run her down on the street. She and her friend Holly make a list of pro and con people they knew were very vocal about her racing — sadly more con than pro. But would someone go as far as to commit murder? Kate finally realizes that if she is to be her best behind the wheel in the race she must focus on herself, the car and the race. Her troubles off the track, and there are more than a few, must be put behind her. At the Night of the Champions dinner, Kate finally uncovers the mystery of who wanted her dead, and she must do whatever is necessary to survive the confrontation.

The cast of characters in Braking Points are really quite extraordinary, from Kate Reilly herself to team owner Jack Sandham to her best friend Holly. As might be expected of a racing-themed mystery, the pace of the story is fast, quickly moving from one scene to the next, never veering too far off-track, as it were. There is a nice balance of suspense and adventure to the story, one that will have readers anxiously anticipating the metaphorical finish line of the book.
