Tunnel Visions
A Firefighter Thriller by Kurt Kamm
Review: A terrorist alert warning of a possible attack on the water supply lines to Southern California brings back memories of a catastrophe that claimed the life of Los Angeles Fire Captain Nick Carter's father, in Tunnel Visions, a stand-alone thriller that combines elements of historical fact with present day fiction.
In June 1971, seventeen men were killed while constructing the Sylmar Tunnel, part of a billion dollar system of shafts and tunnels designed to carry water to Los Angeles. An explosion within the tunnel filled the air with deadly methane. As the tunnel was expected to carry only water, no ventilation was built into the design. Willie Carter, Nick's father, perished in the disaster.
As a child, Nick knew he would grow up to be a firefighter. And he did, eventually becoming the leader of the Urban Search and Rescue group. On an early Sunday morning in 2014, Nick and his fiancée ATF Special Agent Cindi Burns answer the call by Homeland Security to respond to an alert of possible terrorist activity on the lines carrying water from Northern California to the arid southern part of the state. In Nick's mind, this is a repeat of the accident that killed his father, only on a much, much larger scale.
Tunnel Visions is a stunning novel, creatively — and realistically — blending fact and fiction into a thrilling story that is even more remarkable as it could very well happen today. The lead characters are depicted as everyday people concerned for their family and friends, their neighbors, and those they don't know personally but would be affected by the actions of a terrorist organization. The history of the Los Angeles area and its thirst for water adds a strong backdrop to the action. This is both a thoughtful and thought-provoking thriller, one that is highly recommended.
