Lunch Lady and the Schoolwide Scuffle
Review: The Lunch Lady series of graphic novels comes to a close with an action-packed finale in Lunch Lady and the Schoolwide Scuffle by Jarrett J. Krosoczka.
Thompson Brook's new superintendent, Dr. Van Grindheimer, has made sweeping changes in the staff that opposed her efforts to clean up the school, starting with the cafeteria. But she has much, much grander plans for the school: to install a laser on the roof of the building (powered by students running on treadmills in the gym) with the intent to destroy the moon! When Lunch Lady is informed of the dastardly plot she decides to take action: "Betty, break out every gadget we have. Kids, rally the student body. It's time to play with our food!"
And play with the food they do! From electronic bananarang to linguini lassos to hairnet … well, nets, the students start to take back their school, communicating via ice cream sandwich walkie-talkies. It's all very exciting following along as the students take down, one by one, the villains controlled by Dr. Van Grindheimer. But what about the superintendent herself? The Lunch Lady wants to take her on alone, but soon realizes there is something familiar about Dr. Van Grindheimer, something she decides to use to her advantage.
Lunch Lady and the Schoolwide Scuffle is a strong final chapter to this series, one that will not only entertain its intended audience of elementary school readers but may also have their parents chuckling at some of the antics and the cleverly designed devices used.
