Another One Goes Tonight
A Peter Diamond Mystery by Peter Lovesey
Review: Near the end of an all night tour of duty for two police officers, they answer one last call. On their way to investigate, their patrol car screeches to a halt and spins off the road, killing the driver and leaving the other officer with life-threatening injuries. Detective Superintendent Peter Diamond of the Criminal Investigation Division in Bath, England is called in to investigate the accident, along with CID officers Keith Halliwell and Ingeborg Smith. Their superiors hope that they will find no evidence that the two exhausted officers were at fault. What they did find was that an elderly man who had been riding a motorized tricycle had also been involved in the accident, in Another One Goes Tonight, the sixteenth mystery in this series by Peter Lovesey.
The old man had not been found right away as his cycle and body had been thrown up a hill on the side of the road. He was still alive, but barely. Diamond administers CPR while he associates call for backup. He was still breathing as the ambulance took him away but he was also very weak. This took the team's investigation in a whole new direction. What was this elderly man doing riding his tricycle down a dark road well before sunup? Diamond and his team look further into his background and find he is wealthy, has an avid interest in trains, and a lot of antiques. He is a widower but with four urns high on a shelf that appear to be human ashes. Soon they make a tenuous connection between the old man and some unsolved crimes including grand theft and murder. But the evidence is at best circumstantial. The only one who could help them was still on life support and couldn't be questioned. The witnesses involved in the crimes were dead — all the principal ones, that is. The scenes weren't accessible without a warrant — and Diamond couldn't get one. This would be an investigation unlike any other in his vast experience as a police detective.
Peter Lovesey writes some of the most interesting and intricately complex mysteries published today, and Another One Goes Tonight is no exception. It is an absolute thrill to follow along with Peter Diamond and his investigation; there is plenty of misdirection to keep him and readers on their toes about what is true and relevant and what isn't. This is a stellar example of this author's work, and is highly recommended.
