Second To Nun
A Giulia Driscoll Mystery by Alice Loweecey
Review: Giulia Driscoll has been hired by the owner of the Stone's Throw Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast to exorcise the "family ghost", in Second To Nun, the second mystery in this series by Alice Loweecey.
Giulia, an ex-nun turned private investigator, is very happy that her agency has taken off. But this case seems really outside the bounds of her standard fare. Apparently the "ghost" has been causing havoc at the inn, cutting the gas line and flooding the basement, even committing arson. Giulia, intrigued but skeptical, asks her husband Frank, a police detective, to accompany her undercover for a week as guests of the B&B. Maybe she'll solve the case quickly, and still have some time for a little romantic vacation!
The building on the property is over 100 years old, and has been in MacAllister "Mac" Stone's family for the entire time. The most notorious event ever to occur is that a highwayman, who stole a shipment of gold, purportedly buried it on the grounds. No proof, however. After Giulia and Frank arrive, they begin to come up with a list of who might be the "ghost". The tarot reader? The psychic hired to conduct séances for the guests? Maybe even one of the guests? When Giulia is pushed down a flight of stairs, she concludes that someone is trying to protect something, but who and what?
Second To Nun is a delightful mystery, a well-crafted whodunit with elements of the other-worldly to keep it all the more interesting. Giulia and Frank are an engaging couple, but it is their client, Mac Stone, a 75-year-old woman, who steals the show. The suspects have credible motives, and it is a treat following along with Giulia as she winnows the list down to the most likely to be the "ghost". This very enjoyable, nicely paced cozy will have readers eagerly looking forward to the next in the series.
