Cover of Snow
Review: A deep snow that has fallen — and continues to fall — during a frigid winter in the Adirondack Mountains completely covers not only the grounds, but also conceals secrets dating back twenty-five years, in Cover of Snow, a novel of suspense by Jenny Milchman.
Nora Hamilton wakes one morning to find her husband, Brendan, has committed suicide, his body hanging from a glass globe in their hallway. She is devastated but also deeply puzzled: there had been no signs of stress or unhappiness. After college, they had returned to Wedeskyull, New York, where Brendan joined the police force, following in the footsteps of his father, a job he found fulfilling. Believing that possibly the answers she seeks lie with his colleagues at work, she turns first to Brendan's best friend and fellow officer Club Mitchell … who tells her to simply get on with her life. Leave Wedeskyull, move nearer her own parents. But Nora can't leave without closure, and to her that means understanding why Brendan killed himself.
Cover of Snow is a gripping novel, an extraordinary story cast with fascinating characters. The backdrop of Upstate New York is the perfect setting for this often eerie drama to play out, one where secrets have been buried and hidden for years. With little to go on, Nora turns to a reporter new in town, one who isn't afraid to stir up the past. Together they embark on a most remarkable journey, to a destination neither can begin to predict or even imagine. This is really quite a stellar book, one not to be missed.
