A Case of Redemption
Review: Daniel Sorenson was once a dynamic successful trial lawyer. His ambition and purpose were crushed when his wife and young daughter were tragically killed in an automobile accident. For the past eighteen months he's done little but drink and despair. Now Nina Harrington, a third year associate of Martin Quinn Law Firm, offers him a chance to turn his life around in A Case of Redemption, a stand-alone legal thriller by Adam Mitzner.
Nelson Patterson, known as Legally Dead, or more simply L.D., is a popular rapper, who has been accused of murdering his girlfriend Roxanne. The crime is making front page news daily. Although L.D. swears he did not kill Roxanne, the evidence against him seems insurmountable. She was beaten to death with a baseball bat, which — coincidentally? — is the theme of L.D.'s most popular rap song, about a gangster, who kills a singer with a baseball bat. Plus, L.D. has no alibi for the night of the murder. The baseball bat, the murder weapon, is missing. L.D.'s current lawyer wants him to accept a plea, but he has refused. Nina Harrington is convinced she can get him acquitted, but she needs Daniel Sorenson's help. When it becomes clear they do not have enough evidence to get an acquittal, they, too, appeal to L. D. to take a plea. Again he refuses. Sorensen believes L.D. is innocent, but he has no way to prove it. Will L.D. go to prison for a crime he maintains he did not commit, and how will this potential courtroom loss affect the future of Daniel Sorenson?
A Case of Redemption is a captivating crime novel that takes the reader into the world of today's rap stars, where the amount of money being made — and spent — is staggering. There are motives aplenty here. But the storyline also takes an insider look at what it takes to put on a defense, especially one as high-profile as the one at the center of this story. This is a swift and enjoyable read, full of twists and turns that keep the tension level high while Sorenson and Harrington's case races forward.
