Finding Sky

A Nicki Valentine Mystery by Susan O'Brien

Finding Sky by Susan O'Brien

Review: Nicki Valentine is a young widowed mother with two pre-school children to raise. Although she adores her children, to the point of being over-protective, she wants to have an identity of being something more than a mother. With her keen intuitiveness and natural instincts, she decides to try to become a private investigator, in Finding Sky, the first mystery in this series by Susan O'Brien.

Nicki is taking classes while her children are in pre-school, or when she has her mother or her friend Kenna to watch over them. Kenna is eagerly awaiting the birth of a baby, due in just a few weeks, one that she and her husband plan to adopt. The eighteen-year-old mother of the baby, Bess, wants to give it to them for adoption, but her parents are against it, and Marcus, the father of the baby, doesn't want the baby to be born at all and said to have threatened Bess if she doesn't get rid of it. And now Bess is missing, her friends thinking she has run away, unable to face the stress. But Kenna is hoping that that is not true, that she is just hiding until the baby is born. Although she is still new in the class for private eyes, Kenna reaches out to for help. Bess's parents won't talk to Kenna, and she can't find Marcus. The police have been notified but have had no luck in finding her. Nicki sets out on her own to try to find Bess, getting advice from her private eye class instructor. She soon finds herself in situations mothers shouldn't have to be in, and faces danger when she runs into gang members that are rivals of Marcus's own gang. Somewhere there is someone who knows where Bess is. It is Nicki's hope she will find her before the baby is born.

Finding Sky is a witty introduction to this series, intermingling motherhood and mystery and a determined private investigator in training. Nicki's children, Jack and Sophie, are so typical of preschoolers and love it when Nicki's mother is called in to baby-sit. A grandmother, after all, is much more lenient than a mother. Fast paced and appealing, with a well-structured storyline, this cozy will have readers eagerly looking forward to the next installment in the series.
