Another Day Another Dali
A Serena Jones Mystery by Sandra Orchard
Review: Serena Jones, a Special Agent with the St. Louis FBI, has been trained by and is partnered with Tanner Calhoun and his team in the field of art crimes investigations. Serena’s grandmother told her in secret that an original Salvador Dali painting had been stolen and replaced by a forgery in the home of her friend, Gladys Hoffenmeier, and she wanted Serena to investigate, in Another Day, Another Dali, the second mystery in this series by Sandra Orchard.
Gladys did not want to notify the police as her son was on the force and she did not want him to find out inasmuch as she feared her son and daughter would insist that she was not able to take care of her large home, that she sell it and move into an adult living facility, which she has refused to do. Serena agrees to look into the theft. She believes it will be a typical routine investigation. But the further she probes into the situation and compiles a list of suspects, the less routine it becomes. The Dali isn’t the only painting that has recently been stolen and replaced by a forgery. What she thought was an inside job by Gladys’ kids could be a theft/forgery ring linked to the Mafia, dirty cops, or even an aspiring young artist.
Still, as Serena digs deeper into the mystery certain details point to members of Gladys’ family. And here’s a surprise: possible ties to the unsolved case of her grandfather’s murder fifteen years ago. Serena needs to try to solve the mystery, but dreads the outcome if it is an inside job. To complicate matters more, someone connected to the crime is determined to stop Serena’s investigation no matter what the cost.
The recurring cast of characters is quite likeable and it is a delight to follow along on their investigative adventure. There are also quirky characters that add humor and a couple of guys that may be potential love interests for Serena. And, of course, Aunt Martha is always on hand with advice and encouragement. Although there are quite a few characters and a so much action the story’s mystery is straight-forward and not that difficult to follow, though it is sometimes hard to keep up with who are the bad guys and who are the good. Delving into the world of art crime and forgery is always a fascinating subject for crime novels and adds a lot of interest to the story.
