A Port Aster Secrets Novel by Sandra Orchard
Review: Herbal researcher Kate Adams is finally on the brink of discovering the secret of the supposedly "miracle" medicinal plant Amendoso, which she believes was the cause of the disappearance, or death, or her father twenty years ago, in Desperate Measures, the third and final book in the Port Aster Secrets trilogy by Sandra Orchard.
What is so special about this plant that a multinational pharmaceutical company would burn down a remote Columbian Village to control it? So special that her father sacrificed a lifetime with his family to research its value to mankind? So special that now, all these years later, GPS Pharmaceuticals (the company her father worked for) would track it down to Port Aster and kill a man to get their hands on it?
The present-day study of this plant may or may not have some connection into the recent death of her mentor and lab partner, Daisy Leacock, and possibly to the attempt on her own life. Kate has the plant hidden in a locked solarium in a dark corner of her basement. She will not tell Tom Parker, the detective with whom she shares a romantic relationship, about the hidden plant for fear he will try to stop her research. She needs help, but she does not know who she can trust. She even suspects Tom on occasion. Kate is willing to risk everything, even her relationship with Tom, to solve the mystery of the plant. She believes, too, it is the only way to find out what happed to her father many years ago. Tom, although he finds it very difficult to keep Kate safe in as much as she seems to find trouble at every twist and turn, has proven that he will do anything to protect her. Plus, he has told her that there are others searching for the plant, including an organization who wants it for criminal purposes. With so many others in pursuit of the plant and wanting to solve the mystery of it, Kate going it alone may just prove to be her own undoing.
This fine faith-based novel of suspense has Kate wanting to believe God will still help her in her search for the truth about her father, and in her trust and love for Tom, and in helping her uncover the mystery of the plant. There are times, however, when she feels her faith isn't, or won't be, strong enough. The mystery surrounding the plant and those who will kill to get it is a terrific one. There are quite a few characters in the book, but because their relationships and connections are well-defined, it isn't hard to keep track of them. Overall, this is a fitting and satisfying conclusion to this series.
