Outfoxed

An Andy Carpenter Mystery by David Rosenfelt

Outfoxed by David Rosenfelt

Review: New Jersey attorney Andy Carpenter heads back into the courtroom to defend a man accused of murdering his wife and partner, in Outfoxed, the fourteenth mystery in this series by David Rosenfelt.

Andy would rather be working with the Tara Foundation, the dog rescue group he founded. Indeed, it was through this group that he met Brian Atkins, in prison for committing a white collar crime. Andy had begun a program with the county prison of allowing inmates to train with the dogs in the hope of making them more adoptable. Some of the prisoners may want to adopt the dogs themselves when they leave. But just weeks before Brian is set to be released, he escapes with Boomer, the small terrier he was working with. He returns to his home, where he finds his wife and business partner murdered. Asking a neighbor to call the police, he runs, knowing he'll be accused of the crime. His freedom doesn't last long, as he is caught and he is the obvious suspect. Andy agrees to represent Brian, and quickly makes a connection to a local crime boss. Though Andy's wife, Laura, a former police officer herself, usually helps him with his cases, this time Andy fears for his family's safety, and insists that Laura and their adopted son Ricky stay with her parents until the trial is over. But Laura can't stay away, and returns to help Andy with Brian's defense. The police think they have a slam dunk case. Andy simply has to prove they don't.

Outfoxed is yet another in a long series of terrific books in this series. The cast of characters, in particular the recurring characters, are so well-drawn and engaging that it's easy to welcome them back. Or if this is the first time a reader is meeting Andy Carpenter and friends, to feel right at home with them. The overall storyline follows a familiar pattern, Andy being drawn reluctantly back into the courtroom in defense of a client, but each book puts a unique spin on it such that they all feel as fresh as the first one. Do not miss this latest entry in this most entertaining series.
