A Parker Stern Legal Thriller by Robert Rotstein
Review: Attorney Parker Stern used to enjoy going to trial to argue his cases. Now unable to cope with the stress of a courtroom, he's a mediator. No pressure at all in the job. If a case gets settled via mediation, he's done his job; if not, it goes to before a judge and jury and someone else handles it. But the job is also not very exciting. So when he gets an e-mail requesting his services from someone only identified as Poniard, an online video game designer, he's intrigued, in Reckless Disregard, the second book in this series by Robert Rotstein.
Poniard has developed the popular game Abduction!, in which a character is depicted as being responsible for the 1987 disappearance and possible murder of actress Paula Felicity McGrath. In the game, Paula pleads with players to solve the mystery of her abduction. Poniard is being sued by William "The Conqueror" Bishop, chairman and CEO of Parapet Media, who accuses the game designer of patterning the character after himself. But just as Parker is about to decline to represent him, Poniard threatens to expose a secret from Parker's past, effectively blackmailing him into being his lawyer. Parker and his case assistant Brenda Sica, a whiz at Internet research, delve into the lives of everyone associated with Bishop and McGrath. It isn't long before they uncover secrets and deceptions that clearly someone doesn't want revealed.
There is a lot to like about Reckless Disregard. There is, of course, the primary mystery surrounding the disappearance of Paula McGrath and the possible involvement of William Bishop, but there are subplot mysteries as well. Who is Poniard and why did he develop a "game" with this particular potential crime as its premise? And what secret does Poniard have over Parker Stern that compels his participation in the investigation? The cast of characters is diverse and well-drawn, and the storyline develops and unfolds in such a manner that it's a constant guessing game as to how it will play out. Creatively combining a legal thriller with a murder mystery, this is a very entertaining novel that draw readers in and keep their attention until the very end.
