Dead Broke in Jarrett Creek

A Samuel Craddock Mystery by Terry Shames

Dead Broke in Jarrett Creek by Terry Shames

Review: Samuel Craddock is the retired Sheriff of Jarrett Creek, a small Texas town that is now facing bankruptcy. It can no longer afford to keep a full time police force. The mayor has asked Craddock to come back and head the department again at a salary of $1 per year. He will have only two part-time officers working with him. But that's okay because Jarrett Creek is a small town with small crimes … or at least it was … in Dead Broke in Jarrett Creek, the third mystery in this series by Terry Shames.

The very night the city board is meeting to decide Craddock's job offer, a man murdered right at the side of the building where the meeting is being held: Gary Dellmore, the son of the owner of the local bank. Although Dellmore was married, he was a flirtatious man who enjoyed the company of the young clerks at the bank and at other places in town. Indeed, there are quite a few men and women who won't be grieving over Dellmore's death. Although it would be easy to assume that Dellmore's murder is the consequence of one of these relationships, Craddock quickly learns of information that might provide another motive. Dellmore had a record of bad business investments, plus he took a kick-back from a company who had secured a loan from him as an officer of the bank. He was also a party to the huge business scandal that just about sunk Jarrett Creek. Who killed Gary Dellmore? Was it an angry husband or lover of one of the women he with whom he had a liaison? Or was it someone that was cheated out of money in one of his crooked business deals?

Small towns typically make for terrific settings for murder mysteries, and such is the case for Dead Broke in Jarrett Creek. Samuel Craddock is a strong, engaging lead, one that is easy to tag along with during his investigation and seems to welcome the company. The storyline is straight-forward but not predictable, with enough nuances to keep it interesting to the reader. A solid entry overall in this very entertaining series.
