The Black Widow
A Novel of Suspense by Wendy Corsi Staub
Review: Gabriela and Ben Duran once had a happy marriage. Until their infant son Josh died in his crib. Gaby couldn't get past the hurt and sorrow of his death, and soon thereafter divorced Ben hoping that maybe a complete break from her marriage would be what she needed to get on with her life. Gaby's cousin urged her to go onto a dating site, to meet someone, maybe a new soul mate and possibly fall in love again. But, Gaby did not need a new soul mate and she didn't want to fall in love again. What she really needed was a distraction from her life as it now was. And she finds one in The Black Widow, a suspense thriller by Wendy Corsi Staub.
InTune advertised itself as the online place for people wanting to meet new people. Even Ben, who had never stopped loving Gaby, had signed up with InTune. He, too, needed to move on with his life. Gaby knew, of course, that those who signed on did not necessarily tell the truth about themselves on their profile. Some may lie a little and some may lie a lot. She knew the risks. But the first time since the death of Josh, she felt alive herself.
Separately, a serial killer named Alex is reading through the profiles on InTune, looking for his next victim. He knows what he's looking for in a woman, but just can't seem to find the right person to connect with …
The Black Widow is a spine-tingling tale of heartbreak and madness. The two primary storylines do not intersect until well into the second half of the book, at which point the tension level is quite high. It's clear that the paths of Gaby and Alex will cross at some point, and much of the suspense appeal is in wondering how and when. Overall, a very good book for those readers who enjoy their thrillers edgy and electrifying.
