The Perfect Stranger
A Novel of Suspense by Wendy Corsi Staub
Review: Five woman, who share a connection because each has suffered, and survived, breast cancer, "meet" online using an anonymous alias to discuss their experience and keep each other informed on their status. But their public discussions extend far beyond that topic, with each confessing to feelings they could not, would not, discuss with their closest friends or family. When Meredith, one the women that each considered their "group leader", is unexpectedly killed, the other four agree to finally meet in person and pay their last respects at her funeral, in The Perfect Stranger, a stand-alone novel of suspense by Wendy Corsi Staub.
Landry, Elena, and Kay agree to stay at the same hotel, and do meet up, though Jaycee is vague on where she'll stay and never formally joins the group. Indeed, if she was present at the funeral, she didn't make herself known to the others. The three women are shocked to discover that the police are investigating Meredith's death as a possible homicide, and suddenly fear that one of them might be next. Could someone have been monitoring their online activity, and determined the identity of one or more of them? They then learn that "Jaycee" has been identified by the police as a former actress, who had been accused — though acquitted — of stabbing her own daughter to death twelve years ago. Even after all the intimate details they had shared online, how well did this group of five women really know each other?
The Perfect Stranger is in many ways an unnerving novel. The characters are well-drawn individuals, seemingly approachable but then again, maybe not. After the events of the funeral, what transpires will keep the reader engrossed and guessing right up to the suspenseful and surprising ending. The risks of sharing secrets online with strangers, even strangers you think you "know", is at the heart of this story, and will no doubt have readers taking a second look at their own online habits after the final page of this book is read.
