Kings of Midnight

A Crissa Stone Mystery by Wallace Stroby

Kings of Midnight by Wallace Stroby

Review: The lives of two career criminals intersect when each, for their own personal reasons, need to make one last score before retiring for good in Kings of Midnight, the second crime thriller to feature Crissa Stone by Wallace Stroby.

Benny Ross was a member of the gang that stole millions of dollars from a Lufthansa flight out of Kennedy in 1978 but didn't profit from it. The untraceable cash was stolen by one of his partners, hidden, lost forever. Or was it? Benny was willing to let it go and move on but a new mob boss is now breathing down his neck, one who simply assumes Benny knows where the money is. Benny figures he's due anyway, but needs someone to help him track it down.

Enter Crissa Stone. Crissa has made a lot of money as a cool-headed professional thief. She's prospered — and survived — as long as she has by doing her job and keeping quiet about it afterwards. She wants to live with her daughter as a family but there's a price to pay: buying her lover's ticket out of prison. One last heist and she's done.

With the mob on one side and the authorities, who never closed the case on the either, Benny and Crissa find themselves risking their very lives for the chance to start a new one.

Kings of Midnight is a briskly paced thriller that is made better by the exceptionally well drawn characters of Benny Ross and Crissa Stone. They chose the path their lives have taken to date, no regrets, and they simply want to be able to choose the next chapter in their lives. Though the plot is a little familiar, this is an exciting novel, but almost works better as a carefully crafted character study.
