A Disguise To Die For
Review: Margo Tamblyn moved away from her home town of Proper City, Nevada when she was twenty-five. Actually, her father kicked her out so she could start a life of her own, and not be tied to the family costume shop, Disguise DeLimit. But now she's back, in A Disguise To Die For, the first mystery in a new series by Diane Vallere.
Actually Margo hadn't moved very far. She was just forty-five miles away in Las Vegas, where she had held a number of low-paying jobs. Her most recent was performing as a magician's assistant when her father had a heart attack, and needed her to return home to run the costume shop while he recovered. Also on hand to help out was Ebony Welles, a fifty-six-year-old woman with a 70's-style afro, who was like a surrogate mother to Margo after her own mother died when she was born. Ebony had her own party planning business, Shindig, and while business was good, it was irregular. But it is Spring and Proper City typically held a number of costume parties during the season. The first upon Margo's return is a birthday celebration for Blitz Manners, one of the wealthiest — and overbearing — young men in town. The place where the part was to be held had flooded, so he employed Ebony to find a suitable location and Margo to supply the costumes, everything from Sherlock Holmes to Nancy Drew … all in two days. With great effort, Margo and Ebony manage to accomplish it all. On the day of the event, just before the meal was to be served, Margo finds Ebony in the kitchen standing over the body of Sherlock Holmes — aka Blitz Manners — who had been stabbed to death. Although there are plenty of suspects, the police go with the most obvious. Margo knows Ebony is innocent and knowing the police won't spend much effort to search elsewhere, sets her mind to finding the true killer.
A Disguise To Die For is a most entertaining mystery, a page-turner from start to finish. The characters are well-developed and seem perfectly suited — pun intended! — for a cozy-style series. The murder mystery plot is nicely handled and moves along briskly. Not unexpectedly, there are recipes included from the meals featured in the book, but there are also a list of the costumes used for the fatal birthday party and suggestions on how to create your own. All in all, a fine and quite enjoyable start to this series.
