The Intercept
A Jeremy Fisk Thriller by Dick Wolf
Review: Jeremy Fisk, a detective assigned to the NYPD Intelligence Division and a member of the Joint Terrorism Task Force, is convinced that what took place on 9/11 is just the first in a series of planned attacks on the United States. Just days before a Fourth of July celebration and the dedication of a monument honoring the dead, Fisk and his new partner, Krina Gerston, see signs that another attack may be imminent in The Intercept, the first in a new series by Dick Wolf.
A man on a commercial flight into New York tries to take control, only to be thwarted by four passengers and two crew members. A jihadist act of terrorism? Probably. An isolated incident? Probably not. Part of a more coordinated conspiracy? Almost certainly … at least that's what Fisk and Gerston believe. The pair seem uniquely qualified for their job: Fisk is fluent in Arabic and Gerston spent time in Iraq as part of a transition team. They follow the clues that lead them to another isolated incident of potential terrorism, which they believe is linked to that aboard the plane. No one is safe this holiday weekend. Not in New York City … and maybe not anywhere.
The Intercept is a chilling account of what could happen right here in the US. The plots and counterplots are remarkable and thought-provoking … if also rather convoluted and seemingly over-complicated. But then again, maybe the characters need to be seen as thinking and acting broadly, to consider not only the probable but the possible, if their mission is to keep Americans safe. This is an intriguing start to a new series, which at this point seems very narrowly focused. It's going to be interesting to see how the author continues its development without becoming repetitive.
