The Deep End
The Country Club Murders Series by Julie Mulhern
Review: 1974, Kansas City, Missouri. It is a swinging era riddled with drugs, sex and booze. Ellison Russell is a country club wife, an artist and the mother of a teen aged daughter. She has a cheating husband, Henry. who she long ago stopped caring about. She stays in the marriage for the sake of their daughter, Grace. As she does most mornings Ellison goes to the country club pool to swim some laps before her busy day begins. This particular morning she swims into the floating dead body of Henry's current mistress, in The Deep End, the first mystery in The Country Club Murder Series by Julie Mulhern.
She notifies the authorities, who immediately determine that the dead woman had been murdered. As the first person to find the body, and one with a motive, Ellison is named a person of interest in the police investigation. Although a competent detective is assigned to the case, Ellison decides to look into the murder herself. She soon finds that Henry had at least two more mistresses and they all belonged to a kinky sex club. When the two women show up, Henry disappears. More probing proves that Henry was deeply involved in a blackmail scheme involving the women from the sex club and members of the country club. As more dead bodies begin to appear, Ellison realizes that she or the detective needs to solve this mystery before she becomes a victim herself.
The Deep End is an enjoyable, frequently amusing mystery with a mixture of off-beat characters that create twists and turns to keep Ellison — and the reader — off-guard while trying to solve the murder and keep herself out of jail. The plot is well-structured and the characters drawn with a deft hand. Setting the story in the mid-1970s is an inspired touch, with the seemingly free spirited nature of the community contrasted against the rigid norms of a society woman in a loveless marriage. A fine start to this mystery series, one that is highly recommended.
