Shadows on a Maine Christmas
A Maggie Summer, Antique Print Mystery by Lea Wait
Review: Antique print dealer Maggie Summer travels to Maine to spend the Christmas holidays with the love of her life, Will Brewer, in Shadows on a Maine Christmas, the seventh mystery in this series by Lea Wait.
Will had to give up his home in New York two years ago, moving to Waymouth, Maine to care for his 92-year-old Great Aunt Nettie. When Maggie last saw Will in October, she told him she wanted to adopt a little girl. He is not keen on the idea, and does not see fatherhood in his future. She clearly has much to discuss with him, but first, Aunt Nettie wants her to help plan a luncheon for friends she has known since childhood. There aren't many of them left. One, Betty, suffers from Alzheimer's; her memories from 70 years ago are sharper than those of yesterday. The luncheon is a success, though Betty made some unusual comments that brought questions to Maggie's mind. When it was over, Maggie asked Aunt Nettie about them. It seems these old friends were involved in something many years ago that they promised to keep secret forever. But now someone is blackmailing them, threatening to reveal this secret unless they pay. Before anyone can decide what to do, Betty's caretaker is murdered. Is there anything Maggie can do to help? Will's good friend Nick, a police officer, has told Maggie to stop interfering with the murder investigation. But Will is puzzled by Nick's actions. What has happened to him that has caused him to be so edgy recently?
Shadows on a Maine Christmas is a solid entry in this series. The mystery plot is well-structured and interesting, involving issues such as elderly care, adoption, child abuse, and abortion. But it is the characters and setting that are so engaging here, drawing the reader into the story and keeping the pages turning. On a side note, each chapter opens with interesting facts about antique prints.
